What is the PQ?

The Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (PQ) is the largest scenography event in the world that explores a wide range of scenographic practices – from stage design and costume design to lighting design, sound design and new scenographic practices such as site-specific, applied scenography, urban performance, costume as performance, and much more.

Launched in 1967, the PQ takes place every four years and presents the most up-to-date trends in the field of performance design and architecture of the performing space. The core of this international event consists of the traditional, competitive Section of Countries and Regions and Student Section that feature exhibitions from more than 78 countries and regions from all over the world.

As of 2009, the PQ has been organising activities to supplement the main events. In addition to the exhibitions, the wide programme includes symposia, workshops, performances, educational events and residencies to promote an international platform for exploring the theory, practice and education of contemporary scenography as an expanded field.

Addressed to countries and regions, the PQ is not a festival, and thus, does not accept proposals for shows or exhibitions from individual artists. However, to expand the possibilities for individuals to present their entries at PQ2015, the organisers introduced a Performing Space section focusing on theatre architecture, the PQ Show and Tell night as well as three experimental exhibitions and live events: Objects, Makers and Tribes.
